The Academic Staff Union of Research Institutions (ASURI), the National Library of Nigeria branch, has donated a library to LEA Primary School Kiyi in Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
In her welcome address during the commissioning of the library on Saturday, the chairperson of (ASURI), Comrade Folasade Adepoju, said the gesture was to provide information and knowledge to the society.
“The fact that we take off with this project in our foundation period as trade union is a pointer to how passionate we are to bring about a society where libraries will abound to cater for information and knowledge needs of Nigerians,” she said.
She said LEA Primary School Kiyi was the union’s pioneer school library development project.
She said their aim was to assist in kick starting the library by provision of a modest quantity of books and other resources as well as provision of professional services in organizing the library by offering training to staff and pupils on use of library and information and digital literacy.
She appealed to the Chairman of Kuje Area Council, Alhaji Abdullahi Galadima, to provide funds for improving the library.
Speaking earlier, the chairman thanked the union for providing the library.
He urged the head teacher of the school to take care of the library and ensure that children read books every day.
