NBC Fines Various Radio Stations For Breaches In Ethical Broadcasting

Hate speech has been a topic of civil discuss in the country of recent. The secessionist tension and other forms of unrest has led Nigerian authorities to hamper on the danger of hate speeches and the problems it can cause if not curbed.

Nigerian lawmakers have recently raised a bill against hate speech and now the National Broadcasting Commission has joined the crusade by rolling out fine and sanctions on radio houses found of guilty of various ethical breaches.

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has fined 23 radio and television stations across the country N3million for various broadcasting breaches.

The NBC’s spokesperson Maimuna Jimada, who disclosed this Tuesday in a statement made available to Daily Trust, said the broadcasting stations were punished for hateful speech, vulgar lyrics and unverifiable claims.

 The breaches are contravention of the provisions of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code in the third quarter of 2017, according to the NBC.

Mrs Jimada also said the contraventions were made between June and September this year and all the erring stations had been fined according to the provisions of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.

She said broadcasters had a duty to promote the socio-economic well-being of the Nigerian state and abide strictly by the provisions of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code or face sanctions.

Daily Trust gathered that Family Love FM Port Harcourt (fined N200, 000), for use of hateful speech on 9/6/2017; ABS FM Awka (fined N100,000) for use of hateful speech on 1/7/17; Express FM Radio Kano (fined N300,000) also for use of hateful speech on 12/9/17, 16/9/17 and 17/9/17.

For using indecent musicals, the NBC fined Royal FM Abuja, Flo FM Umuahia, Radio Continental Lagos and Crystal 100.5FM Minna N100,000, N100,000, N200,000 and N100,000 respectively.

For making unverifiable claims in their broadcast, the regulator punished Crowther FM Abuja, Harmony FM Abuja, Inspirational FM Uyo, BCA FM Umuahia, ABS FM Awka, Minaj Systems Radio, Obosi, IBC (Orient TV), Owerri, Rainbow FM, Isheri, Globe FM Bauchi, Arewa Radio, Kano, EBS Radio Benin and Bond FM Lagos with fines of N100,000, N100,000, 100,000, 150,000, 100,000, N100,000, N50,000, N100,000, N100,000, N100,000, N100,000 and N499,000 respectively.
