The Millennium Park, Maitama, is Abuja’s biggest recreational park. The park is located on a land of about 32hectares.
The Park attracts large number of people trooping there to relax and enjoy its variegated servings and facilities at weekends , during holidays and other festive periods.
At such periods, you find lots of kids playing, lovers holding hands, birthday and wedding ceremonies going on, parents smiling and walking around, photographers making brisk business, hawkers selling their wares, music playing and some gyrating to the sounds of the renditions.
The park is divided into two parts by a river crossing the Park in its main rectilinear axis, dividing it.
One side on the Park is dedicated to uncontaminated nature like Savanna, Deciduous forest, Rainforest and brushwood as well as greenhouses for butterflies and tropical birds.
The other side, is dedicated to the scientific knowledge of the natural environment. This part of the Park has a very traditional and rigid Italian Style Garden Layout.
It has a nice walkway with fountains and night light which are not all functional at the moment.
This Park, conceived and designed by the Italian architect Manfredi Nicoletti
Each Commonwealth Head of State planted a Ravenala madagascariensis palm. Among them was former President of Nigeria Olusegun Obasanjo, UK prime Minister Tony Blair and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
There are ongoing plans in the pipeline to expand the park with projects to include the millennium tower, cultural centre and a museum that will house a broad collection of African arts.
